As physicians across the United States began to review their Electronic Health Records (EHR) software in light of the ONC’s Meaningful Use Stage 2 certification, Healthland approached Macadamian to conduct summative testing on three of their products: Healthland Clinical Information System, Healthland Centriq, and Healthland Centriq Clinic.

Designed to present in-patient medical information to healthcare providers in community hospitals, these desktop applications integrate with long-term and clinic care areas to provide physicians and nurses with a complete view of patient information from all care areas. Physicians and nurses use the application to track patient care options and data for recording patient admission, discharge, and patient care during their hospital stay including: clinical documentation (progress notes, vitals, intake/output, assessments forms and care plans), pharmacy profile, CPOE, eMAR, and tracking patient histories.
Healthland wanted to ensure that the features of their three solutions were easy to use and eliminated any risk of errors that might lead to misdiagnosis or any potential harm to patients.
Macadamian put Healthlands EHRs through summative usability testing to evaluate and validate the usability (effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction) of the current software user interface, and provide evidence of usability. The key criteria tested included: computerized provider order entry, drug-drug, drug-allergy interaction checks, medication list, medication allergy list, clinical decision support, electronic medication administration record, electronic prescribing, and clinical information reconciliation. The summative usability test enabled Healthland to:
• Establish a usability benchmark
• Determine whether requirements have been met (satisfying the central usability measures of effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction)
• Compare results with an earlier version
and, more importantly, prepare for Meaningful Use Stage 2 Certification.
