Xmark: Improve A Pediatric Protection System That Keeps Sick Children Safe

Xmark

Nothing is more important than keeping children safe, especially when those children are in the hospital. And that's why Xmark developed the Pedz Pediatric Protection system, which monitors the location of children in hospitals, protecting vulnerable children from the risks of abduction or patient flight.

Xmark knew that the Pedz system had no room for error—a few seconds of confusion could mean a sick child leaving the hospital. So they contacted the experts at Macadamian to evaluate the interface of the Pedz software to ensure that it was clear, simple, and conveyed the right information as quickly as possible.

Macadamian's study revealed that a few improvements could make a world of difference for Pedz. We suggested that alarms be tied to clearer patient information, including a photo to help identify the child on sight. We helped Pedz take their map interface one step further by tying patient alarms to locations on the map to make it easy for people monitoring the system to know where to find the child who needs their help.

The result was that Xmark lowered the training time required for the system—when an alarm happens, users know exactly who to look for and where to go. This lets healthcare workers respond more quickly when a crisis happens, helping keep sick children safe.
