Avaya: User Interface Design for VOIP phone

Project: User Interface Design for VOIP phone
Technologies: User interface design, Telephony, Telecom, VoI
Services: Software Interface Design
Domains: VOIP, Desktop Applications

Situation. Avaya (then Nimcat Networks) wanted to create a powerful, yet simple, interface for each of the telephone sets they are supporting. They wanted to deliver technology that their customers could use with no manuals and no training.

It was also important to Avaya to deliver a consistent user experience across all the different sets, including the softphone.

Solution. Macadamian was asked to create a model for the Telephony User Interface (TUI) that could be applied to different telephone sets with different capabilities while maintaining a common user experience. Macadamian designers worked alongside the Avaya development team to ensure the implementation followed the design as specified and to resolve any issues encountered in the implementation of the UI.

For the softphone, Macadamian visual interaction designers were asked to create concept skins. Three concepts were delivered for consideration and once a design was decided upon, Macadamian provided the graphic components necessary for the Avaya developers to construct the entire softphone skin.

Benefits. Macadamian worked with the Avaya team to deliver detailed and complete UI specifications and navigation maps for implementation into each set. Avaya has gone on to deploy several customer-specific telephone sets and softphone based on their peer-to-peer technology, with a consistent user-friendly experience.

COMPANY PROFILE. Nimcat Networks is a leading provider of embedded call processing software. Founded in 2002, Nimcat set out to solve a known problem: that of properly addressing the telephony needs of the Small and Medium Enterprise. Nimcat developed a complete Peer Telephony eXchange (PTX) IP call processing solution called nimX. When embedded on standard VoIP telephone sets by Network Equipment Vendors, nimX is simple to use, easy to deploy, easy to expand, easy to maintain, and highly scalable. By eliminating the need for costly central equipment, Equipment Vendors can now benefit from better margins. nimX's plug and play characteristics enable new channels to market and lower the pain of entry for the SME.

Nimcat's patented solution offers a complete feature set found in enterprise Private Branch Exchange (PBX) and traditional Key Telephone Systems (KTS), as well as additional application modules. The software can be ported on the platform of all major silicon manufacturers.

Nimcat Networks is delivering the next generation in call processing for small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs). Their peer-to-peer solution leverages Voice over IP (VoIP) technology to give businesses an alternative to the traditional PBX - a simple to set-up, simple to operate, low maintenance network.

Nimcat was acquired by Avaya in 2005.
