March Healthcare: Telehealth and Remote Patient Monitoring Platform
Imagine you're a senior citizen living in a remote area. Now imagine your health isn’t very good—but getting to the hospital for monitoring on a weekly basis isn’t possible.
Imagine you’re a nurse in Northern Canada. You’ve got ten home visits to make a week—but they are so far apart that you have to spend twenty hours on the road. If the weather even lets you make it. You know you could help more people, but the travel time won’t let you.
Along comes March Healthcare with a great idea: Home TeleHealth, that allows people to collect their own health data, under the supervision of a nurse. The only difference? The nurse visits through a live feed through the television.
One problem - The target demographic for this product is seniors—the least likely group to be comfortable using technology. In order for March to be sure they would be able to take their own temperatures, blood pressure, and other tests, it had to be flawlessly simple.
Solution: The Macadamian Usability team didn’t take any chances with the interface, beginning with a simple design and testing it with both patients and nurses. Watching the testers performing common tasks, they identified what tripped them up and where things could be simplified.
Benefits: The simple product design meant people felt really comfortable using Home TeleHealth. Product results showed that the patients were just as happy with the televisits as the home visits, not missing the ‘personal touch’—a friendly face and voice is just as friendly when there’s technology involved.
