Situation. Quest Software (formerly FastLane Technologies)’ DM Administrator divides network administration tasks between users on the network, reducing the workload of the network administrator, or, in some cases, eliminating the need for a company to employ a full-time network administrator at all. FastLane wanted to create a Java version of DM Administrator, but recognized that its development team did not have the necessary experience with the Java language to create what they wanted: A web-enabled version that was indistinguishable in design and functionality from its Windows counterpart. The Internet version would allow users to perform administration tasks from any location, and would be a key selling feature of the product.
Solution. Macadamian developed a Web-enabled interface that connects to the back-end Windows NT service, which allows users to perform administration tasks over the web. The two versions of the product resemble each other so closely that it is hard to tell the difference between the Java version and the native Windows version.
Benefits. The product now lets users perform their administration tasks through an Internet connection. Since the web-enabled version has an identical interface to the Windows application, the learning curve is extremely low.
