Corel: Help Corel be first to market on the latest version of Windows
Situation. Corel has often been the first software vendor to launch a product on each new version of Windows, starting with Windows 3.0. For the launch of Windows XP, Corel wanted to be first to market with a software product bearing the “Designed for XP” logo to show support for the new Windows XP operating system. With only months remaining to Microsoft’s Windows XP launch, Corel had to move quickly to develop the CorelDRAW® Essentials suite for XP. To bear the Microsoft stamp of approval “Designed for XP”, the application would have to support several new XP features, including theme awareness, fast user switching, and clean install/uninstall.
Solution. Being first on a new platform has its disadvantages—developing on a new platform means working with Beta versions of the operating system, incomplete APIs, very little documentation, and no support from the developer community. Corel chose Macadamian to develop CorelDRAW® Essentials for Windows XP, based on our track record in migrating applications to brand-new platforms.
Benefits. Developing the application before the official launch of Windows XP meant that Macadamian custom developed tools and methods for supporting new XP features. CorelDRAW® Essentials is one of the first applications to be theme-aware . Not only was the product released in time for the Windows XP launch, but the tools developed and the lessons learned by Macadamian are being used by Corel’s engineering team to update the rest of the product line to Windows XP.
