A nurse treating a patient doesn't have the time to call Tech Support to ask how to use a new medical device. So when Cardinal Health's software development team created an innovative prototype bedside patient information system with a totally new touch-screen interface, they wanted to ensure it was as easy to use as possible. This patient information system has the potential to replace paper-based charting, providing patient status and historical data to support diagnostic decisions without overwhelming nursing staff with information they didn't need.
Cardinal Health had a lot at stake—time, resources, customer loyalty, as well as quality of patient care—so they wanted to ensure that the product met the needs of their key users in a real-world environment, not just in the development lab. So they called Macadamian Usability to evaluate the prototype before they moved on to a full release.
Macadamian tested each screen for ease of use. The recommendations Macadamian made helped make the interface cleaner and simpler to understand and operate, so that nurses working under stressful circumstances could get the information they need at a glance.
Macadamian identified the features and design elements that could cause confusion, such as information that needed to be reorganized for clarity on the screen, or when critical information needed to be displayed in a larger font for easier readability.
Armed with our recommendations, Cardinal had the information they needed to make their application an integral tool for nurses worldwide.
