Whenever the topic of data vs design comes up, I always think of Douglas Bowman's post about leaving Google:

http://stopdesign.com/archive/2009/03/20/goodbye-google.html

He was the head designer at the time, and Google's unwavering data-is-king philosophy is what chased him away. So, it's not just about products. Employees like to be creative, and sometimes that means more than optimizing data. Doug made that clear:

"Yes, it’s true that a team at Google
couldn’t decide between two blues, so
they’re testing 41 shades between each
blue to see which one performs better.
I had a recent debate over whether a
border should be 3, 4 or 5 pixels
wide, and was asked to prove my case.
I can’t operate in an environment like
that. I’ve grown tired of debating
 such minuscule design decisions. There
are more exciting design problems in
 this world to tackle."

It makes me very happy to see that Google is pushing hard on this. It's not quite a full HIG, but it's getting there!

Android's pixel independence also makes me very happy (although I would like it if it gave me a UI scale control to take advantage of this).

Great review, Matt!

My boss lent me a Fire for a bit, and I came to the same conclusion. It's great for consuming books and videos, but it's weak for email and most types of browsing. Even worse for me, the app store wasn't working in Canada at the time, so I couldn't download any apps (a robust Google Reader client with offline support would have been great).

I did really like it as a reading device, though. The form factor of the Fire is much better than the iPad when you just want to read something on the bus or on a couch or whatever.

So true! We still have a long way to go to get to useful, usable software that fully understands the user, but vendors can't forget about making the software visually stunning.

The visual "wow" is what creates an emotional bond between a potential customers and your product, in less than a few seconds. Do you really want to see another light-blue-and-white healthcare app? Do you really want to see another boring menu-and-toolbar enterprise dashboard?

Visual design is the upfront message your product sends about how it stands out from the crowd of competitors.

More and more EHR of this type should be developed that make such complex process of taking patients' notes and other activities about their data gathering easy. At Techliance we also develop such complex applications with user friendly GUI that makes such process easy. Keep writing on such issues. Cheers.

I was happy that libraries of all sizes were allowed... mine was 500 LOC and others, considerably more. Very cool.

I liked it because it was a comparably "intimate" setting for presenters because we could all mingle before everyone else came in. I got to meet some really cool devs.

This excellent advice matches my own experience. I particularly encourage people to use video. I don't know what it is about seeing each others' faces but it really helps communication. Setting up a virtual telepresence device transformed my team's communication w/ coworker 12 hours different. We also use photos on our task board - we put the person's photo next to what they're working on. Also we post lots of photos on the team wiki - not only of work-related things such as whiteboard drawings, but fun photos of coworkers.

Very good article. I especially concur with the section on "different points of view". At my current company, we have an informal UX team which includes me (a product manager), an engineer, a software architect, and a QA engineer. I tend to play the role of designer (by creating wire-frames as a starting point), then everyone dives in to hone the UI. The engineer creates a high-fi prototype that we review, the QA engineer writes test cases and finds design flaws, the software architect periodically reviews the results. It really works great. It's much better than the "throw it over the wall" approach that I've seen in past organizations.

But I'm wondering if we manage to do this integrated approach because we don't have a formal UX team. When we (the informal UX team) get together, someone often says, "when we finally hire a designer, she'll take over X & Y." Now I'm thinking that this is not the right way to view things. If we hire more designer talent, we should integrate them into the cross-functional team, not replace that existing team. So, thanks for helping me arrive at this insight.

It has become less likely that Australian dollar will rise to the parity with US dollar after it added 28% during the past year.
forex trade
Such assumption was made because the country’s central bank may stop increasing interest-rates as quickly as it was doing. In addition, yuan’s revaluation turns out to be more possible. Specialists at Barclays Capital project that Australian currency will suffer the most from appreciation of Chinese currency.

Analysts at Morgan Stanley are very bearish on AUD/USD. They suppose that Aussie can lose 16% hitting the level of 84 cents by the end of this quarter and 78 cents in December as higher borrowing costs have negative impact on the economic growth.

I too agree with your point that nation's long-term health and wealth is directly related to the number of engineering and design graduates. But these days the number of graduates starts declining. So for the good of our nation we have to do whatever we can for solving this problem. Computers for communities is a great initiative and I hope this idea can do its part in bringing back students to the educational path by donating computers. This initiative will definitely help foster a new generation of future engineers and designers.

While I am sure developers will eventually choose to utilize HTML5, whether they choose to embrace its “Flash killing” features will depend on more than just promises and initial excitement. As Tariq rightly points out, having the right development tools, efficient work flows and low learning curves will play a huge role in overall uptake/utilization.
