Macadamian wins SCOAP award of excellence

A 2001 SCOAP award for Best IT Initiative Resulting in Positive Social or Community Advancement goes to Macadamian Technologies Inc. and Multilingual E- Data Solutions (Multedata) for Asuilaak, The Inuktitut Living Dictionary. This online collaborative dictionary uses latest technologies to help preserve and develop Inuktitut as a living, vibrant language.
Macadamian Technologies Inc., a provider of Java™ and XML-based Web and eBusiness solutions and Multilingual E- Data Solutions (Multedata), specialists in multilingual computing applications, are proud that Asuilaak , a product of collaboration with the Department of Culture, Language, Elders, and Youth (CLEY) of the Government of Nunavut has earned them this award. In SCOAP's judgement The Inuktitut Living Dictionary captures the knowledge of Inuktitut that is in the heads of elders and citizens of the north, uses cutting-edge technologies, resulting in positive social or community advancement.
Asuilaak, the world's first online collaborative dictionary in Inuktitut, English, and French, was developed as a joint venture between Macadamian Technologies, Multilingual E- Data Solutions, and the Department of Culture, Language, Elders, and Youth of the Government of Nunavut. This Web-based online dictionary invites Inuktitut speakers and language experts worldwide to contribute their knowledge of Inuktitut words and definitions, and translations to English and French. Asuilaak is fully searchable in Inuktitut, English, and French, and serves as a translation reference and a repository of information on the Inuktitut language. It is also a valuable tool for teaching Inuktitut to current and future generations.
Asuilaak was developed using Macadamian's Syndeo™ Web Development Kit, an innovative platform based on Enterprise JavaBeans™ and XML technology that simplifies development of dynamic, XML-based Web applications. Syndeo's multilingual capabilities and data modeling flexibility met the unique challenges involved in developing the dictionary. They include support of both Roman and Syllabic representation of Inuktitut. Multilingual E-Data Solutions, multilingual computing and Unicode experts led the project, providing expertise in building software tools and applications for the Inuktitut language.
